Officially Becomes a French Citizen, George Clooney Gets Snubbed by Donald Trump

The decision immediately sparked public reaction, including sharp remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump. Reports say Clooney changed his citizenship together with his wife, Amal Clooney, and their twin children.

Instead of offering congratulations, Trump took a jab at Clooney through his Truth Social account. In his post, Trump brought up Clooney’s political views, which have long been at odds with his own. 

Trump even suggested that Clooney is more famous for his political opinions than for his achievements on the big screen. He questioned Clooney’s status as a major movie star and described the quality of his films as merely average. The remarks quickly spread and triggered mixed reactions from netizens.

Known for being outspoken in criticizing Trump, George Clooney did not remain silent. However, rather than responding harshly, the Oscar-winning actor chose a relaxed, satirical tone. 

He said he agreed with the slogan “Make America Great Again,” while quipping that the change would instead begin in the upcoming November election.

Behind his decision to change citizenship, Clooney emphasized that there were reasons far more personal than politics. He said he wanted to provide a calmer and safer living environment for his family, especially his children. 

According to him, life in France is far removed from the paparazzi pursuits that often disrupt celebrities’ privacy in the United States.

In an interview, Clooney described France as a place that better respects personal boundaries. He noted that there are no photographers lurking around his children’s school, and that fame is not something the local community overly cares about. This, he said, has become his family’s top priority.

Nevertheless, the process of granting Clooney French citizenship sparked some debate in France. Some questioned the fast-track path he reportedly received, especially since his French language skills are said to be less than fluent. 

However, the French government defended the decision, arguing that the Clooney family has had a positive impact on France’s cultural image globally.

Now, despite holding a French passport, George Clooney appears unlikely to stop voicing his political views. The “war of words” between him and Donald Trump is therefore expected to continue, even though they are now separated by oceans, and by different nationalities.
